The Arizona Historical Society, established in 1884, is a statewide institution devoted to preserving and interpreting Arizona history.  The Tucson facility houses a large history museum with exhibits, a library, archives, artifact collections, and administrative offices.   Exhibits include a life-size copper mine, transportation hall, history hall, period rooms c. 1900, interactive look at frontier Tucson, and a variety of changing exhibits.  The Arizona Historical Society publishes the quarterly Journal of Arizona History

Monday through Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Sunday 12:00 noon to 4:00 p.m.

Arranging a Visit:

Reservations are required with 3 weeks advance notice. No fee required. The average tour lasts 50 minutes. Minimum group size is 5; the maximum group size is 60. Chaperones are required with a preferred ratio of 1 to 10 students. Grade range: all ages.

Tour description:

  1. Tour of main floor - docents cover the highlights of the major exhibits.
  2. Exploring 1870s Tucson tour. Discover what life was like in frontier Tucson in this hands-on exhibit.

Other resources:

An excellent research library contains a wide variety of material on Arizona history including photo archives, newspaper microfilm, maps, city directories, etc.  Hours are Monday through Friday 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Outreach programs

History-to-Go
Docents present one-hour, interactive programs exploring past lifeways using artifact kits to school grades 4 - 12. No fee.

Arizona History Audio-Visual Services
Educators can borrow one of 23 audio-visual presentations featuring diverse perspectives on Arizona history. No fee.

Arizona History Textbooks
Two secondary level textbooks are available: the award-winning Studies in Arizona History and Arizona Constitution and Government.
