Located 64 miles east of Tucson in the massive rock formations of Texas Canyon, the Amerind Foundation is an archaeological research facility and museum. The name "Amerind," a contraction of "American Indian," illustrates the purpose of the Foundation, which is devoted to the study of Native American culture and history. The Amerind was originally founded in 1937 by William Shirley Fulton (1880 - 1964) as a private, nonprofit archaeological research institution. Today, Amerind staff actively uphold those goals originally set forth in the Foundation charter: "…to increase the world's knowledge of ancient man by excavation and collection, by study and analysis, and to present the resultant artifacts and data for public enlightenment."
